One Week Left to Sign up to Vote by Mail in the upcoming November 6, 2007 Election

Apply by October 30 deadline

Redwood City, CA – San Mateo County's Chief Elections Officer, Warren Slocum reminded voters that there is only one week left to sign up and vote by mail in the November 6 Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District Election. Applications to vote by mail will continue to be accepted until the close of business on October 30, 2007. According to Slocum, 44 percent, or 137,562 of the San Mateo County voters eligible to vote in this election, have already signed up to vote by mail. As of October 23, the Elections Office had already received 20,089 voted mail ballots.

Eligible voters wishing to vote by mail must file an application form or a written request to do so. The applications are readily available. Voters can use the online form on the Elections website, www.shapethefuture.org; call the Elections Office at (650) 312-5222 and request that an application to be sent to them or fill out the form on the back cover of the Sample Ballot Pamphlet. Voters may also send a written request to vote by mail to the County Elections Office at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo, CA 94402, stating:  (1) Voter's full name; (2) voter's San Mateo County residence address; (3) mailing address for ballot, if different from the residence address; (4) name and date of the election the request is for; (5) and the voter's signature. Any of these paper forms can be faxed to (650) 312-5348 in lieu of mailing them.

Requests must be received (regardless of postmark) by the Elections Office no later than 7 days prior to the election, or 5:00 p.m. on October 30, 2007. Voted mail  ballots will be accepted at both Elections Office sites, 555 County Center, 1st Floor, Redwood City or at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo, through the close of the polls at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 6, 2007.

Registered voters may also drop off their voted mail ballot at any polling location on Election Day if they are concerned about the post office having sufficient time for delivery. They can also vote in person at the Elections Offices at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo or at 555 County Center in Redwood City at any time from 7:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 6th.
