Preparations Underway for the November Election

City Clerks and County Election Office meet to plan 2007 Uniform District Election

(Redwood City, CA)  As is the tradition, the City and Town Clerks in San Mateo County and the County’s Elections Office sit down together to prepare for an upcoming Election. This year is no different.

But everything about this year’s election is different. Imagine a circumstance where the voting equipment that will be used by the majority of the voters is different, the election processes and procedures will be different, the polling place requirements are different, and the level of expertise required of poll workers is greater. “This November’s Election will be different in every way. We are reinventing the conduct of this election and all the elections that will follow in the next decade,” said Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum.

“It is vitally important that our City Clerks are part of this redesign process to review what’s planned, ask questions, raise concerns, make suggestions and know what their voters can expect on Election Day,” Slocum continued.

“Fortunately, we have developed a collaborative working relationship with the Clerks of San Mateo County and we very much appreciate their contributions. Being well prepared for November’s Election will give everyone peace of mind.”

City Clerks have an essential role in the preparation of every election, especially Uniform District Elections. They are the Election Officer of their city or town and they are the official Filing Officer for their city’s elective offices. In San Mateo County, the cities have traditionally, through statute, requested that the County conduct consolidated elections with other agencies to
reduce the number of elections, reduce voter confusion and save money. “We are honored to have their trust and to provide this service,” said Slocum.

Slocum and the Elections staff will host the meeting at 9:oo am on June 20th at the Elections Division Office located at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo.

“Our goal is ensure that voters have full confidence in the process and that that process is hassle-free. The can-do-spirit and collaboration of the City Clerks and the County Elections will help maintain that standard of excellence in elections.”

The November 2007 Election, a Uniform District Election (UDEL), is comprised of local races. The schedule allows for contests in 13 cities and towns electing 37 officials holding the offices of Mayors, Council Members, City Clerks, and Treasurers; 14 School Districts electing 31 Governing Board Members; and 19 Special Districts electing 44 Board of Directors or
Council Members.

Subjects scheduled for discussion will include: The election calendar, candidate filing procedures, candidate statements, a review of pertinent laws and regulations, election day coordination, and election services provided by the County.
