DemocracyLive! Student Poll Worker Training Begins

Redwood City, CA –This week marks the beginning of the Democracy LIVE! Student Poll Worker training classes. Students from Daly City to Menlo Park are learning about what it takes to work on Election Day. Nearly 500 students from 21 high schools across San Mateo County are participating in this program that gives high school seniors the opportunity to be poll workers on Election Day. Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum notes, “The countywide interest in Democracy LIVE! has exceeded our expectations and we are thrilled that so many high school seniors will get an inside look at the elections process and have a fundamental role in the November 2006 election.”

Democracy LIVE! students will work alongside veteran poll workers and undertake all polling place responsibilities. Starting this week, Democracy LIVE! students are attending three hour training classes that cover the new eSlate voting system, polling place procedures and how to assist voters. The students are paid for both the training class and their service on Election Day.  Classes are held Monday through Thursday on the high school campuses throughout the County.  There will also be classes on Saturdays.

Democracy LIVE! Program Coordinator, Sarah Carrade notes “The participating schools, especially the Government teachers, have been very accommodating and we appreciate their support of our program.”
