Time to Gear Up for November’s Local Races
County announces offices up for election and filing deadlines

(Redwood City, CA) - San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer, Warren Slocum, issued the official public notice of the date and scope of the consolidated election set for November 7, 2006.

The regular slate of elections for city, school district, and special district offices will be consolidated with the Gubernatorial General Election. In total, over 70 local offices are up for election and the elections office estimates that there may be a dozen or more local measures and state initiatives on the ballot. The exact number of measures will not be known until the August 11 deadline for submitting a local measure.

“I encourage all voters to become more engaged and active in their community institutions,” said Slocum. “Running for local office is a noble calling and a great way to make a difference in the community.”

For candidates seeking local elected office, the filing period opens on Monday, July 17, 2006 and runs through 5:00 P.M. Friday, August 11, 2006. If an eligible incumbent has not filed by that later date and hour, the period is extended and candidates (other than the incumbent) will have until 5:00 P.M. on August 16, 2006, to complete the nomination requirements for that office.

To make an appointment or obtain information, prospective candidates may call (650) 312-5370 and ask for Mark Numainville, the Candidate Filing Officer. For further information, voters may contact the San Mateo County Registration-Elections Division at (650) 312-5222, or visit www.shapethefuture.org.
