The Mechanics of Running for Public Office

Candidate Seminars for Prospective Officeholders & their “Kitchen Cabinet”

(Redwood City, CA) - The San Mateo County Elections Office will hold a workshop, entitled “The Mechanics of Running for Public Office,” for all potential candidates considering a run for office in November of 2006.  This informative seminar will be held on Wednesday, July 12th from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo.

“This is an opportunity for any prospective candidate interested in running for office, or any voter simply interested in the election process, to meet with key elections staff and get answers to questions about the rules, deadlines, and procedures that apply to local candidates and campaigns,” said Chief Elections Officer, Warren Slocum. “There are important issues that candidates must consider before throwing their hat in the ring.  Our Candidate Seminars help demystify the process and hopefully encourage interest in running for office.”

The topics covered will include campaign finance reports, the filing process, candidate statements, important deadlines, voter registration, absentee voting, and various elections rules and regulations governing campaign activities.

The Candidate Seminar agenda, Candidate Handbook & Resource Guide for the November 2006 election and an RSVP email link is all available on www.shapethefuture.org .  Attendees may also call Mark Numainville, the Candidate Filing Officer, at 650.312.5370 or e-mail mnumainville@smcare.org with their name, the office they are seeking, and the number of persons in their party.

Candidates who are unable to attend the Wednesday, July 12th Seminar need not worry.  An identical seminar is also planned for Saturday, July 29th at 10:00 a.m. at the Elections Office at 40 Tower Road.

The list of local offices up for election on the November 7, 2006 ballot is attached.  An undetermined number of State and local ballot measures may also appear on the ballot.  The calendar dates for filing to be a candidate or qualifying a measure for the November ballot are on listed in the Election Calendar that can be found on the homepage of www.shapethefuture.org .
