Candidate Filing Closes Amid Flurry of Activity

Last-minute filers flock to Elections Office at deadline.
Over 110 candidates file for county, state, and federal office.
Some districts see filing deadline extended.

REDWOOD CITY, CA— Rounding out an impressive candidate filing period, the San Mateo County Elections Office accepted paperwork from candidates right up to the 5:00 p.m. deadline today.  “We are always busy as filing comes to a close, and we are excited to help candidates move forward in their campaigns for public office,” stated Warren Slocum, San Mateo County’s Chief Elections Officer.

Over the span of the four-week filing period, the Elections Office helped over 110 candidates for county, state, and federal office for the June 6, 2006 Gubernatorial Primary Election.  “Candidate filing is always an energizing time – it kicks off the election season and gets people interested in the issues at hand,” Slocum noted.

Since February 13th, candidates have streamed in and out of the Elections Office to file candidacy papers for federal legislative offices, state constitutional offices, state legislative offices, partisan central committees, Superior Court Judge, and countywide offices.  Some races will be highly competitive races, while others may not appear on the ballot as there are equal candidates to available seats.  The final look of the ballot is not set as the filing deadline for select offices has been extended by five calendar days to Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at 5:00 p.m.  The Elections Code states that when an eligible incumbent does not file nomination papers by today’s deadline, the deadline is extended to allow non-incumbent candidates to declare candidacy.

Joining the candidates on the ballot will be measures for Cabrillo Unified School District and Menlo Park City School District.  The end of the regular candidate filing period also marks the deadline for submission of local ballot measures.  Primary arguments in favor of or against qualified ballot measures are must be filed by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2006, and rebuttals to those primary arguments must be filed by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2006.   Arguments for school measures are filed with the County Elections Office.

For additional assistance or to schedule a filing appointment, contact Mark Numainville, the Elections Office Filing Officer at (650) 312-5370.

A complete roster of candidates, measures, and districts with extensions and/or contested elections can be found on the Elections Division web site www.shapethefuture.org.  This roster is updated nightly and is attached for your review.
