Chief Elections Officer Certifies November 8, 2005 Election Results
Board Adopts Certified Results

(Redwood City, CA) Today, Warren Slocum, the Chief Elections Officer for the County of San Mateo, certified the official election results for the November 8th Consolidated Special Statewide Election and presented them to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors for adoption. They were approved unanimously.

“I am proud to submit the results of the November 8th election; it was an important election for the people of this County who selected those to represent them on city councils, school districts and special districts. Democracy is alive and well in our County—there were many people who were candidates for office and willing to serve their communities,” said Slocum.

The certified election results are bound in a 150 page document entitled the Statement of the Vote–which by law, must be approved by the Governing Body, and in this consolidated election, that body is the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.

The Statement of the Vote provides results for each contest--(statewide measures, local measures, and local candidates) by precinct, the total number of votes cast, the total number of votes cast in each precinct, as well as the total number of votes cast in each of the following jurisdictions: city, assembly district, senate district, congressional district, board of equalization and supervisorial district.

A breakdown of the absentee ballots cast and the polling place ballots cast will be made available on a precinct by precinct basis, too. This additional report is not part of the bound Statement of the Vote adopted by the Board of Supervisors, but it is being made available by the Elections Office, upon request. The Statement of the Vote can be downloaded from the Elections website, www.shapethefuture.org for free or a bound version of the Statement of the Vote may be purchased for $20.00.

Turnout in the November 8th election was 55.12% which is substantially higher than in a regular off-year election. Slocum speculated that the turnout was due to the controversial statewide ballot measures that drew people to the polls. Of the 351,506 registered voters, 193,739 voters cast ballots. The number of people voting at the polls slightly outnumbered those that chose to vote by mail, a phenomenon that is growing in popularity not only in San Mateo County, but in California as a whole. “Only 52% of the total vote was cast at the polls on Election Day,” said Slocum, “while 48% of the voters cast their votes by mail.”
