New High-Water Mark for Registered Voters

Increase of nearly 40,000 since March Primary

REDWOOD CITY, CA – The deadline to submit a voter registration form for the November 2, 2004 election was October 18 th, but that was just the beginning for County Elections Officials. The last minute influx of over 20,000 forms put the Elections office in overdrive as staff worked 13 hours a day, seven days a week to process all the forms in time for the election.

The close of the voting rolls in San Mateo County came amid a flood of registration forms – both from voters and from the Secretary of State. The huge last-minute surge has created an unprecedented amount of activity in the voter registration unit. However, long hours and hard work by the unit has processed the new registrations as well as the voter-requested changes for name, address, or party affiliation timely.

San Mateo County’s voter rolls closed with 368,410 registered voters, which topped the previous record of 355,053 from the 1996 Presidential General Election. In addition, the closing number for the November election represents an increase of 38,213 new voters over the March 2 nd primary registration closing number of 330,179.

The largest age group of registered voters, showing 76,602 participants, is the 45-54 age group. The next largest group, the 35-44 age group shows 73,897 voters. Voters 65 and over were the third largest group a count of 72,288. The 55-64 age group with 56,376 voters is very comparably sized with the 25-34 age group that has 56,306 voters. San Mateo’s youngest voters, ranging in age from 18 to 24 reflect 32,941 registered participants—this age category increased dramatically as shown in the attached graphs.

How the new voters will affect the election is anyone’s guess, but Slocum knows that there is more work to be done. “We have done a great job of getting people registered, now we must redouble our efforts to ensure a high turnout on Election Day; that will be the true measure of our success,” said Slocum.
