Redwood City CA – It’s official; there are more registered voters in San Mateo County today than at any time in the County’s history. The new milestone was reached amid a flood of registration forms – averaging 1400 forms per day leading up to Monday’s midnight deadline.
“What a great day for San Mateo County voters!” proclaimed Warren Slocum, Chief Elections Officer for San Mateo County . “This is a record we all can be proud of; it shows that our citizens are excited about the election and aware of the importance of voter participation.”
At 2:14 p.m. Saturday, October 16, 2004 , San Mateo County ’s voter rolls surged past the previous record of 355,053 set during the 1996 Presidential General Election. The new benchmark will not be known until all registration forms received or postmarked by the October 18 deadline have been processed, but Elections Officials expect the number to grow significantly.
Slocum attributes the record number of voters to increased interest in this year’s Presidential race, the ongoing outreach programs of the Elections Office, and the efforts of community groups to register new voters.
