- League of Women Voters –
San Mateo County
The League of Women Voters has fought since 1920 to improve our systems of government and impact public policies through citizen education and advocacy. The organization began as a "mighty political experiment" designed to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as voters. It encouraged them to use their new power to participate in shaping public policy. From the beginning, the League was an activist, grassroots organization whose leaders believed that citizens should play a critical role in advocacy. This influential organization applies a grassroots approach to issues and is organized on the local level. In San Mateo County alone, there are three branches of the League that take positions on issues of countywide interest including health services, housing and land use policies. They have been influential in bringing attention to some of the most pressing issues in the county.
Be a Smart Voter
In 1996, The League of Women Voters of California Education Fund established Smart Voter, the first web site to offer personalized election information based on a voter's address. Designed to help voters understand their choices better, Smart Voter offers extensive background information on candidates as well as information on ballot measures. For nearly ten years, Smart Voter has been providing San Mateo County residents valuable information that allows voters to make responsible decisions. Visit www.smartvoter.org for information about the June 6 Primary Election and make informed decisions.
